I was browsing the internet (like ya do), and came across this interesting set of plans for free* on the website Woodturning Online. It says: "This project is a beginner’s guide to making a segmented bowl. It has only 3 layers and uses 6-sided segmented rings for the middle and top rings. This project is easy to make with basic woodworking and woodturning skills and tools."

I jumped through the hoops (filled out a form, gave them my email which subscribes me to a low volume newsletter, and downloaded the PDF file from a link) and right away I got the document downloaded. A quick read through shows me that it is easily worth it, the steps are pretty detailed, and it seems pretty decent in terms of explanations and detail.

The bowl they show you that you can make looks really nice, and I've always been curious about segmented turning. This seems like a nice way to get started with the basics.

* by free, I mean you have to subscribe to an email newsletter, of purported low volume. However, when I signed up it, it did not check the validity of my email address, nor make me jump through any hoops. Once you fill out the form, you get sent to a download link for a PDF file. So, if one were to enter false information in an effort to avoid more spam... it just might work. On the other hand, I think I'll stay on the subscription list and see if anything else interesting comes up.

Update: I just got the email from them confirming that I was added to the list, and included this text at the end "P.S. We hope that after seeing a newsletter or two you will choose to remain on our subscriber list. Each newsletter will have a link so you can unsubscribe or change your mail preferences. However, if you wish, you can unsubscribe immediately by clicking on this link." That seems fair. I'll let you know if anything good comes along.
