Tonight I turned my first captive rings. Using a piece of the aformentioned green pearwood I turned a small baby rattle. I'll post pictures later, but I just wanted to crow my success! I had a bit of a problem getting the rings free, because I didn't allow enough space, so I wanted to do something like a goblet with a pair of captive rings (like for a wedding present) then I would certainly need a "captive ring tool" or to make one my self. I've been thinking of trying to make on out of one of those nine inch nails (not the band, the nail) you can buy at the hardware store.

I first tried to use my small skew, and that did pretty well, but getting the final bit was hard, I took an old bent screwdriver and attempted to make a bent chisel thingie out of it on the grinder. It sort of worked. And by sort of, I mean, it did work, but it was really hard and wasn't really clean.
